Cannot seem to keep a house plant alive? 

Well we have good news!!! You don't need a green thumb, in fact you do not have to do much at all!

With the appropriate light, water and heat, you plant will be a beautiful reminder of thoughtful gift you received months ago.  
Be sure to follow the lighting requirement on the plants individual care tag.

1. Be sure to follow the proper lighting requirements for each individual plant
2. Here are some tips when watering
   1. Move your plant to a sink or water safe area
   2. Water the plant and allow excess water to drain from the bottom of the pot so water doesn't sit in the soil and create a mold
3. When considering temperature keep in mind most plants do not do well in drafty areas or directly against a glass window in direct sun.  This will overheat the plant and often burn marks will appear on the leaves.
4. To minimize pests and disease be sure to prune any leaves or branches that are past their prime and do not allow leaves, etc. to sit on the surface of the soil.

• Keep in partial shade, bright indirect light works well. Insufficient light causes the lack of flowering, low-growing, brittle stems that can crack and break easily.  The leaves may be very dark green in colour or they may start to turn yellow and fall off.
• Keep your plant in a well-ventilated area, orchids do not survive well in heavy, closed environments.
• Keep away from radiators, air conditioning or furnace vents, and strong drafts.
• When watering never let your orchid sit in water for extended periods of time.  The frequency of the watering should be adjusted to the temperature conditions. You will have to water your plants more frequently in summer and less in winter coinciding with the periods of rest (after flowering).  A good rule of thumb for your orchid is to check the colour of the roots where possible.  If the roots are a white color there is lack of water, if the roots are green, they do not need more water.
• What to do with the stem once the flowers have all dropped? You may have heard differing opinions on this subject.  The truth is there are specific reasons for each decision.  If you want to try reproduce the orchid, you will cut the stem above a notch, this will create a keiki (the term used to describe growing a new orchid off a mother plant).  If you want to simply enjoy more beautiful blooms in the near future you will simply cut the old stem right off, forcing the plant to start a brand new cycle.  Growing new flowers off an old stem will result in a flower stem with a less number of blooms and in general smaller sized flowers.
